Royal Oak is…
There really was a Royal Oak and it stood near where the intersections of Main, Rochester and Crooks Roads are today. In 1819, Michigan territory’s Governor Lewis Cass surveyed the to-be-state’s land and found a place to rest under a large oak with long branches. The governor said it reminded him of the legend of the royal oak tree, under which King Charles II of England took sanctuary from enemy forces in 1660. So when the area was put on a Michigan territory map, it was called Royal Oak.
Meet a Royal Oak business pioneer.
Orson Starr, originally from New York, came to Royal Oak in 1831 and built a small empire by making bells for cows and sheep. The cow bells gained national recognition and put Royal Oak on the map. His home, built in 1845, is now a historic landmark.
Royal Oak is the third city nationally — and first in Michigan — to earn LEED® for Cities Certified status. Walkability, abundant green space, low carbon economy, historic preservation, low crime rate and a high rate of educational attainment factored into the designation, which was awarded in 2020.

Five major highways bring people into the city — with easy access to businesses, about 16,000 vehicles travel down Main Street daily. To keep people coming and contributing to Royal Oak’s economy, the city government and residents support business owners. City staff assesses business climate and helps fund storefront facade updates, and local business consultants offer free assistance to established owners looking to refine their business plans or who are interested in feasibility studies.
So, where to park?

Downtown Royal Oak is also undergoing construction that includes several parking garages so parking will be plentiful for both businesses and big events like the year round Saturday Farmers Market (since 1925!) and Royal Oak Music Theatre concerts.
