Located in Utica, Michigan, The LegaSea Aquarium, the latest endeavor from the creators of The Reptarium, located at 45550 Van Dyke Ave in Utica. With an additional 30,000 square feet of captivating exhibits, LegaSea promises to be a destination for visitors from far and wide, enriching the Van Dyke corridor and bringing a wave of excitement to the region.
The inception of LegaSea was born from the visionary mind of Brian Barczyk, whose passion for marine life ignited the dream of opening an aquarium alongside The Reptarium. Despite facing spatial constraints in the original 5,000-square-foot zoo, Brian’s determination led to the acquisition of a spacious building across the street. As renovations progress, LegaSea Aquarium emerges, exceeding expectations!
The transformation of the new facility is nothing short of remarkable. With the demolition of the front wall and expansion forward by nearly 25 feet, LegaSea boasts over 30,000 square feet of immersive space. Decorated with a stunning ocean-sunset-inspired façade, expansive windows, and adorned with a koi pond and bridges, the aquarium welcomes guests into a world of wonder.
Among the highlights of LegaSea Aquarium are its charismatic residents, including Javier the playful capybara, Sid the African crested porcupine brimming with attitude, Lilo the baby two-toed sloth, and Stitch the mischievous binturong. Visitors will also marvel at interactive exhibits such as the brackish mangrove aquarium, featuring archer fish capable of shooting water up to 10 feet to catch insects, offering guests a chance to engage in a unique feeding experience.
Not to be missed is the awe-inspiring 18,000-gallon saltwater reef aquarium and the interactive exhibit featuring nearly 40 baby American alligators, where guests can handle and feed these fascinating creatures. Project Overview for Signarama Troy and The LegaSea Aquarium
Signarama Troy’s collaboration with The LegaSea Aquarium marks a continuation of their successful partnership with The Reptarium in Utica, which began in 2017. Having provided a range of services from wall graphics to channel letters and indoor signage for The Reptarium, Signarama Troy was the natural choice for the signage needs of The LegaSea Aquarium, located just across the street from The Reptarium.
For this project, Signarama Troy utilized channel letters extensively, incorporating images of reptiles and a stingray to complement the aquarium’s theme. The design of the logo, featuring a stingray and a reptile, was conceptualized by The Reptarium employees, with Signarama Troy’s expertise contributing to the sizing of the sign, which spans over 100 feet wide. The name “LegaSea” itself is a clever play on the word “legacy,” reflecting the aquarium’s mission to create a lasting impact.
In addition to assisting with the sizing of the sign, Signarama Troy played a pivotal role in selecting the appropriate films and finishes to enhance the visual appeal of the signage. Attention to detail was paramount, with considerations such as the color of the films and the placement of the letters aimed at creating a visually striking effect that adds depth and dimension to the signage.
With an anticipated opening date set for May 2024, Signarama Troy’s contributions to The LegaSea Aquarium project are poised to leave a lasting impression, seamlessly integrating signage solutions that enhance the overall experience for visitors and contribute to the aquarium’s success.
